Things to consider when booking a short break ski trip

If you’re planning a ski weekend or a short break you want maximum ski time, minimum transfer time. Almost the entire skiing industry is designed to serve snow-lovers with week-long ski holidays. The majority of chalets, apartments and even transfers  are geared to that market which makes organising a ski weekend less straightforward.

However, fly out Wednesday night or Thursday morning and you can have four days skiing for the price of two days off. The My Swft team is full of skiers and snowboarders who’ve spent their lives stretching their holiday allowance to maximise time on the slopes.

We’re sharing what we know with you below and we’d be very happy to help you find the right short-break for your group. Tell us what you need and we’ll put together a selection of options around your requirements that you can share with friends. We’ll then be available to answer questions or tweak the arrangements as you need.

Around your schedule, on-the-go, via WhatsApp or Messenger.

the top of the mountains in Chamonix

Chamonix

Just an hour from Geneva, Chamonix’s convenient location makes it a hit with those sneaking in a cheeky weekend. Local hotel and chalet owners are happy to let you stay for just three or four days, confident there’ll be a similar group ready to occupy the other half of your week.

The town is big by alpine standards and there are excellent hotels right in the thick of it. A new Folie Douce opened its doors in December 2018 and there are numerous excellent mountain bars and restaurants we can recommend when you get there. The resort is spread across five ski areas connected by free resort shuttles and offers spectacular off-piste skiing, while there’s an excellent beginner area by Teleski de Savoy on the Brevent side and there are plenty of cruisey blues for those in-between. Your full area pass will even let you spend a day over the hill in Courmayeur...

France | Nearest airport: Geneva | Transfer time: 60 mins

Altitude: 1,035 m - 3,842 m | Lifts: 65 | Slopes: 262 | Pistes: 155 km

a skier next to a ski lift in Courmayeur

Courmayeur

A great location, high altitude skiing and a picturesque italian mountain resort. The locals are impeccably friendly and there are some gorgeous restaurants dotted about the mountain. There is ample skiing for all levels for over a few days and the more rigorous can always pop through the Mont Blanc tunnel for a day at it in Chamonix. We love our italian partner hotels and so do our guests.

Altitude: 1,200 m - 3,755 m | Lifts: 17 | Slopes: 180 | Pistes: 41.5 km

Avoriaz ski resort at night

Morzine & Avoriaz

This charming old town mountain village has a number of really nice chalets that are open to short break ski trips, plus a few choice hotels. There’s ample skiing in Morzine itself for a few days, although the resort itself is low altitude and you can’t always ski back to the village. For the more intrepid, Morzine connects to Avoriaz, a cliff-top driverless village in the giant Portes-du-soleil with more skiing than you can realistically manage in 3 days… Challenge accepted?

France | Portes-du-soleil ski area | Nearest airport: Geneva | Transfer time: 80 mins

Altitude: 1,460 m - 2,460 m | Lifts: 199 | Slopes: 283 | Pistes: 650 km

La Clusaz ski resort in winter

La Clusaz

A picturesque resort in the Aravis ski area with bags of Savoyarde charm.  While fairly small, there is plenty of skiing and the slopes running up to the La Balme are high enough to be reliable most of the season. The views from the top across the valley towards Mont Blanc are breathtaking. A few bars, restaurants and a night club keep the après compact yet lively.

Flaine ski resort in snow

Flaine

At the top of the Grand Massif ski area, this is another lively resort within easy reach of Geneva and it has a huge amount of skiing. There are both chalets and hotels willing to accept short-break trips on selected dates. Great for groups and families looking to sneak away for a few days or a week.

a skier next to a ski lift in Courmayeur

St Anton

The Austrian resort that needs no introduction, it’s possible to spend a cheeky weekend here but only on select dates. Short-break accommodation is in the form of three and four star hotels. Not a resort for a restful weekend, the après is seriously punchy, and the skiing is extensive and not particularly beginner friendly.

Austria | Nearest airport: Innsbruck | Transfer time: 75 mins

Altitude: 1,304 m - 2,811 m | Lifts: 84 | Slopes: 323 | Pistes: 305 km

These are the resorts we find make the most sense for short break ski trips, roughly in order of accessibility. It’s possible to go further afield. Ski weekends can be had in the three valleys, in Tignes & Val d’Isère, in Mayrhofen and Solden in Austria, in Verbier and Davos in Switzerland. It’s all possible. But the prices rise and the convenience declines. We’re about minimising your admin and maximising your ski time. But ultimately, if you chat to one of our travel planners, we will deliver what you’re looking for.
