Lisbon | City Break | My Swft City

Lisbon

Lisbon is a fascinating and inspiring place with all of the ingredients for an incredible city break – set against the backdrop of the Atlantic Ocean, it has a wide glittering river, clear skies, cobbled streets, palaces, churches, a castle, tiles in pink, mint and indigo, and cheap, fresh, grilled fish to eat outside a tasca (bar) in the sun. It combines that place-that-time-forgot feel with a modern vibrancy that few European cities can match.

The historic centre is relatively compact and easy to explore in just a couple of days. The oldest and most authentic part of the city, which is home to the Moorish Castelo de São Jorge, is the warren of streets that make up the Alfama. However, Baixa is a more popular area to stay in for tourists that are keen to explore the cultural heritage of the capital while dipping into some of its excellent restaurants and cafés.

Lisbon has an excellent and growing culinary reputation, gaining another three Michelin star restaurants last year, it is great value with a beer costing as little as €2 and it is full of stunning views and historic sites. If that isn’t enough, it is covered in street art, it gets more sun than anywhere in Europe and just half an hour from the city centre, there are huge sandy surf beaches.
